Be Civil. Elect Civil.

In my Spring 2024 National Civic Review article, Incivility Anywhere is a Threat to Civility Everywhere,” I warned that toxic behaviour in public life is not isolated, it spreads, eroding trust, discouraging good people from serving, and weakening the foundations of democracy.

From that piece came two simple but powerful actions every citizen can take to help turn the tide: Be Civil. Elect Civil.

This fall, Canadians in several jurisdictions will have the chance to put those words into action. Municipal elections will be held in Alberta (October 20, 2025), Newfoundland and Labrador (October 2, 2025), and Quebec (November 2, 2025). Nunavut will also hold its territorial general election on October 27, 2025. Each of these votes is more than a policy decision—it’s a chance to set the tone for how we live together.

✔️Be civil means showing up every day with respect, patience, and a willingness to listen, even when disagreement is hard. It’s standing up against bullying or abuse and modelling the culture we want to see.

✔️Elect civil means using your vote to support leaders who embody these values, not just talk about them, people who build bridges, engage respectfully, and lead with integrity.

The health of our communities, and our democracy, depends on both.

This fall, let’s make it our shared commitment: Be Civil. Elect Civil.
