City Hiring: 1000 hooved gardeners

There's some good old fashioned "innovation" taking place at the City of Calgary. The City has issued an open invitation to shepherds and their flocks of sheep and goats to graze at half a dozen targeted sites in the city as part of their weed and invasive species control program control program.

Chris Anderson, the urban conservation lead with the city reminds the public that “It’s not a petting zoo — they’re there to work."

This is not the first time that cities have employed nature to deal with nature. Bio-control insects are also used in some settings to bolster anti-weed regimes. Goat grazing as a fire prevention, fire smarting tool is serious business. Download this global academic study on the subject.

In an unusual twist, in March if this year, the Vermont town of Fair Haven, with a population of 2,500 elected a Goat as honorary mayor. The city manager reports it was part of a civics education for students . Mayor Goat was sworn in and continues his first term.
